This question was asked on one of the forums I belong to and frequent. A young lady there was not sure if she was to put her concealer on before or after she applied her foundation, over or under. Quite a few members weighed in with an answer. It was surprising to see how many different answers were given to the question. I only saw one person who had the same method of applying concealer as I do.
I saw a few people who replied to the post saying it is all on personal preference. Some people said flat out it did not matter. This of course made me cringe. It made me think a newbie would take that answer and run with it. Then wonder why they look a crazy.
I was taught that the order of applying concealer depends on the type of foundation you are using. If you are wearing a liquid or cream foundation, the concealer goes on top. If you are wearing a powder foundation, the concealer goes under.
All of this made me wonder what professional makeup artists (MUA) tell their clients or how they apply concealer. So, me being me…I decided to reach out to my favorite MUA, Alexandra Butler, to pick her brain and see which method she uses. I found out that she applies concealer before she applies make up. She did not say why she uses this order of application and honestly, I did not want to offend her by asking why. Her input was appreciated.
S/N: If you’ve seen her work you would understand. Her before and afters are phenomenal! She can truly transform anyone. She is right here in ATL and you know I want a one on one with her.
For some reason, in my head I thought she was going to say she applies foundation and concealer the same way I do. Do not judge me! No, I say that because she is a MAC diva and MAC is where I got my info. Again, do not judge me. So, I guess even the pros have their favorite order of application and it varies by MUA.
I would say for liquids and creams try applying concealer over and under. Then see which look you prefer. If you find that concealer is difficult for you to blend out proper, start with Alex’s method and apply it first. This way you can use the foundation to blend out the concealer. Be careful not to over blend and remove the concealer.
Now, If you are using a powder foundation be sure to apply the concealer under the foundation. We do not want you going out looking like a hot cakey mess. Please do not try to apply the concealer over the powder foundation. That will not end well!
